In more than 40 articles, these journalists have detailed the anthracite export scheme from the Russian-occupied Donbas region of Ukraine. Money from the scheme goes directly to the leaders of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics and to the Ukrainian oligarch Serhii Kurchenko, an individual close to former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. The Russian government guarantees the exporters’ technical and legal support, for example by giving them false documents to prove their Russian roots.
